What other humans does a G.D. work with?

Copywriters

These are the people who write the words that go along with a designer’s images. A large design firm or ad agency will have copywriters on staff, but many writers work independently as freelancers.

Art Directors

A.D.s create visual and creative concepts for ads and ad campaigns. An A.D. might use a G.D. to help create a specific piece of an ad. Sometimes the roles of A.D.s and G.D.s get confused since both work in the visual realm.

Clients

This is where it all starts. A client is a person, business or organization that has a communication problem and needs a G.D. to help solve it.

Design Directors or Creative Directors

In a design firm or ad agency the D.D.s or C.D.s oversee the creative teams. They may also be involved in the management of the business.

Production Managers

In a mid-sized or large firm the P.M.s keep the ship on course, managing project schedules and costs and generally keeping everyone on track.

Account Executives

A.E.s are the liaison (or go-between) with the client at larger firms and agencies.

Printer Reps

For designers working on print projects, the sales reps for the printing companies can be a great resource. They help supply pricing as well as provide advice on printing options and techniques.

Photographers

Many design projects use photography of people, places or things as a visual element. Designers will work with a commercial photographer who specializes in the type and style of photography best suited for the project.

Illustrators

Illustrators create drawings, paintings or collages that designers use in their projects. Different illustrators will use different materials and work in different styles--some could be fun, colorful and abstract while others could be detailed and precise.

Web Developers

More and more designers are skilled at web programming, but those who aren’t will work with a web development firm or HTML programmer to help make web projects come to life.
